Tooth Extraction

Row of wooden tooth shapes, one of which is being pulled out of the row by dental pliers.Teeth are one of the most durable and resilient features of human anatomy. Since their introduction as infants, they assist with vigorous cycles of chewing and biting and help us in our speech, while also allowing us to communicate nonverbally. Through natural wear and tear, our teeth start to weather with age. Furthermore, they can come into contact with harmful environments that cause our teeth damage.

Depending on the cause and extent of damage, it can cause pain or unsightliness. Occasionally, teeth can malform or become crowded. In some cases, teeth may need to be removed for better overall dental well-being. If this happens, we may advise an extraction. Tooth extractions are a means of improving various dental conditions by removing a tooth that is cumbersome or obstructive.

What are Extractions, and Who Can Benefit From Them?

Extractions are simply the removal of a tooth from the socket it is in. Extractions are performed for several reasons. Wisdom teeth extractions are a common example of tooth extraction. If a tooth growing in, such as with wisdom teeth, are growing in a way that poorly affects bite and alignment, they need to be removed. Often, orthodontic treatments such as braces may also require teeth to be extracted to make room for the ideal bite. Extra teeth grow in for some, and as such, should be removed to avoid crowding and misalignments from occurring. Baby teeth that have stayed in too long is another reason a tooth might need to be removed.

Teeth may also need to be removed if there has been significant decay, and our specialists determine it is best to be removed. Certain levels of infection can require the removal of a tooth to maintain soft tissue integrity or remove any buildup of tartar and the potential need for root cleaning. Not only can removing an infected tooth save the soft tissue, but it can also protect the bone underneath.

What is the Process for a Dental Extraction?

There are two types of extractions that we may perform. The first is a simple extraction, and the second is a surgical extraction. Our team of specialists can provide both services with ready confidence and peace of mind for you.

Simple extractions are performed with the use of local anesthetic applied to the tooth and surrounding soft tissues. The anesthesia numbs the nerves to help prevent discomfort during extraction. Elevator forceps are then used to gently encourage the tooth out of its socket. The forceps are shaped like pliers, but are incredibly ergonomic to both the user and to the tooth. This can help ensure a smooth and precise extraction.

Surgical extractions can be performed with local anesthesia or intravenous anesthesia. Conversely, it can be performed with general anesthesia, depending on a patient's circumstances and needs. The bone and tooth may need to be cut with a small incision to allow for smooth removal of the tooth. Once the extraction is complete, the final step is to let the incisions heal.

Understanding the process for tooth extraction can help you feel more confident about this straightforward procedure. If you have any questions regarding extractions, please contact our team here at Viva Smiles Family Dental at (512) 863-9555 today.
