Keeping your oral health in good condition is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your health.

Don't Let Dental Anxiety Keep You From the Dentist

Fear of going to the dentist, either because of worries about the state of your health or because of the memories of past bad experiences, may prevent you from scheduling needed appointments. Unfortunately, as far as your dental health is concerned, ignoring dental visits won't do you any good at all.

A cornerstone of good, modern dental healthcare is the prevention of disease. With a simple good brushing and flossing routine and regular appointments at the dentist, it is likely you can maintain good oral health with the minimum of effort. Any problems will be detected early by the dentist and the appropriate treatment given to prevent any problems from becoming bigger ones.

We know going to the dentist can cause nervousness for some, and we do understand how concerned you can be. We are very sympathetic regarding these situations and can help you have a stress-free experience with the right sedation.

What Are the Different Sedation Options?

Sedation dentistry is also referred to as sleep dentistry or conscious sedation. Using medication helps individuals to relax during their procedure. Some people are so relaxed that they think they have been asleep because they don't remember anything about the procedure. Apart from general anesthesia, patients are usually awake and able to respond to the dentist's instructions.

Viva Smiles Family Dental offer a range of sedation options to cater to different levels of anxiety and the complexity of the procedure. Understanding these options can help patients choose the most suitable method for their needs. The types of sedation we offer include nitrous oxide, oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anesthesia.

Nitrous Oxide

Minimal sedation is the only form of sedation that wears off almost instantaneously, which means you can drive yourself home. It is usually administered in the form of a gas, which is a combination of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oxygen. A mask is placed over your nose and you breathe it in. It is odorless and colorless and works quickly. Once the mask is removed, the feelings wear off.

Oral Sedation

There are several options for oral sedatives. The medications prescribed could include diazepam, Valium, and others in the same category. This medication can help patients to relax for the duration of the procedure. They are typically taken an hour prior to the oral surgery so that there is ample time for the medication to take effect.

Patients will be fully awake but will have drastically reduced levels of concern for the duration of the oral surgery. There may be some drowsiness, but most patients do not fall asleep.

However, it will make you drowsy for several hours and so you will need to arrange for someone to drive you home.

IV Sedation

This level of sedation offers patients a range of options for consciousness. Our oral surgeons will be able to control the level of sedation, to ensure your comfort. You may experience what is known as twilight sleep, where you'll be aware of what is going on, but you may fall asleep for part of the surgery. You may also be put into a deep sleep for more complicated and complex oral surgeries. Only our oral surgeons will be able to determine which option is the best one for you and the procedure that you are going to have.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia renders you unconscious and is administered intravenously. It requires the services of an anesthetist who monitors your breathing and other vital signs throughout the procedure. You will not be allowed to return home until you are awake, and the effects of the medication have worn off.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry offers numerous benefits for patients, making dental visits more manageable and less stressful. Consider the following:
•  The primary benefit is the reduction of anxiety and fear, allowing patients to undergo necessary dental treatments without distress.
•  Sedation helps minimize discomfort during procedures, making it easier for both the patient and the dentist to complete the treatment efficiently.
•  Sedation allows dentists to perform multiple procedures in one visit, reducing the number of appointments needed and minimizing disruption to the patient's schedule.
•  By alleviating fear and anxiety, sedation dentistry encourages regular dental visits, leading to better oral health outcomes and prevention of serious dental issues.

Choosing the Right Sedation Option

When considering sedation dentistry in Texas, it is essential to consult with a qualified dentist such as your provider who can assess your specific needs and recommend the most suitable sedation option. Factors such as the patient's medical history, the complexity of the procedure, and the level of anxiety all play a role in determining the appropriate sedation method.

Aftercare and Recovery

Post-procedure care is crucial to ensure a smooth recovery and maintain oral health. Here are some general aftercare tips for patients who have undergone sedation dentistry:
•  Take it easy for the rest of the day and avoid strenuous activities to allow the sedation to wear off completely.
•  Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially if you experience any dryness or discomfort in the mouth.
•  Stick to soft foods and avoid hot or spicy items for the first 24 hours, as your mouth may feel sensitive.
•  Follow any prescribed pain medications or antibiotics as directed by us to prevent discomfort and infections.
•  Continue practicing good oral hygiene, but brush and floss gently around the treated areas.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Sedation dentistry is safe, but you must be honest about any medications you are taking which could have an adverse effect. The risks may be greater for general anesthesia if you suffer from a medical condition such as sleep apnea, but generally, the other forms of sedation are well-tolerated.
