Dentures

3D rendering of partial dentures being placed on a lower jaw with missing back teeth.Teeth can be lost for a variety of reasons. We first encounter the experience as young children, when our baby teeth fall out to make room for our adult teeth. For some adults, though, tooth loss can be experienced in their lives for several reasons. For instance, teeth can be lost from accidents, or from cavities or other conditions that cause teeth to fall out. What results is missing teeth, which ultimately affect the way one eats, speaks, smiles, and perceives themselves.

Fortunately, a lasting and reliable solution exists and is found in the form of either partial or complete dentures. If you are ready to restore your beautiful smile and confidence, our team here at Viva Smiles Family Dental is more than ready to assist and guide you every step of the way.

What Are Dentures and Who Needs Them?

Dentures are prosthetic devices that are used to replace any missing teeth, as well as support the soft and hard tissues surrounding the vacated space. Most commonly, dentures are removable. These are made from a resin material for the base and teeth, with more flexible polymers that can snugly conform to the gums.

If you experience tooth pain and have not seen the dentist periodically, there is a chance that teeth may need to be removed. If teeth need to be removed in series, that can leave a large gap, making dentures a perfect example of a solution to missing teeth. If someone already has teeth missing, they can still benefit from dentures. If someone experiences painful tooth movement into space where teeth are missing, that is also a good sign that dentures could be used to reinforce that space. Difficulty chewing, especially particularly soft and hard foods, is also a sign that dentures could work to help you chew with ease and comfort.

Partial Dentures and Complete Dentures

Complete dentures are a complete replacement for an entire arch, or row, of teeth. There may need to be some extractions prior to application, however. Full dentures are placed after the gums have healed from all the extractions, which typically ranges around eight to 12 weeks. The dentures are bonded securely to the roof of the mouth with efficient suction created by the denture.

If complete dentures are a type of complete restoration for a row of teeth, then partial dentures are a partial restoration for a select number of missing teeth. Their design is to improve chewing and speaking, and of course, to restore a smile. Partial dentures are attached to neighboring teeth, and they are meant to fill in a gap of a series of missing teeth. The gum lines blend into the natural gums of the patient. For some patients, dental implants may be used to secure the dentures, much like a removable dental bridge.

When one loses their teeth, it can be hard to cope with the emotional toll of reduced self-esteem. Tasks like eating or speaking can also become unnecessarily challenging. Fortunately, with dentures, you can reclaim your smile, comfort, and self-confidence.
