Four Brushing Habits You Need to Drop from Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Woman smiling with brushing her teethWe all know that brushing is a key part of keeping our mouths healthy, but are you sure you're doing it right? Sometimes, even with the best intentions, we can develop habits that actually hurt our oral care. Let's talk about some common toothbrushing mistakes and how to fix them so you can have a healthier smile.

Using the Wrong Toothbrush

First, consider your toothbrush. A hard-bristled toothbrush might feel like it's cleaning better, but it can actually damage your gums and wear down your enamel. Enamel is the protective outer layer of your teeth. Using a hard-bristled brush can lead to sensitivity and other problems down the road. The best choice is a soft-bristled toothbrush. Soft bristles are gentle on your gums and teeth while still effectively removing plaque and food particles. Remember to change your toothbrush every three months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. An old, worn-out toothbrush isn't as effective at cleaning.

Brushing Too Hard

Many people think that the harder they brush, the cleaner their teeth will be. This is simply not true! Vigorous brushing can irritate your gums, causing them to recede. It can also wear away the enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to cavities and sensitivity. Think of brushing like giving your teeth a gentle massage, not scrubbing a dirty floor. Use light pressure and focus on reaching all surfaces of each tooth.

Brushing for Too Short a Time

Most people don't brush for the recommended two minutes. Two minutes might seem like a long time, but it's necessary to effectively clean all areas of your mouth. Try using a timer or playing a two-minute song while you brush to ensure you're brushing long enough. Focus on each quadrant of your mouth (upper right, upper left, lower right, lower left) for 30 seconds each. This helps ensure all teeth get proper attention.

Neglecting Your Tongue

Your tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria. This bacteria can contribute to bad breath and other oral health problems. Make sure to brush your tongue gently after brushing your teeth. You can also use a tongue scraper to remove bacteria and debris. Many toothbrushes have a tongue scraper built into the back of the brush head. Brushing or scraping your tongue is a simple addition to your oral hygiene routine that can make a big difference in your overall oral health.

By avoiding these common brushing mistakes, you can improve your oral health and help prevent future problems. Remember, good oral care is about more than just brushing. It's also about flossing daily and visiting your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Prevention dentistry is the key to a healthy, happy smile!
